Began his playing days at Morgan City High School, where he averaged 21.4 points, 15.2 rebounds and 9.1 blocks as a senior. Long was named District MVP and defensive player of the year. The Morgan City Native also was named to multiple all-district teams in high school.

Long was enrolled at Mississippi state but did not see any playing time, thus he transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette where he averaged 29.8 minutes, 50 FG %, 10.72 rebounds per game.
