The Delaware 87ers first game at the NBA D-League Showcase went pretty well as they picked up a win over the Windy City Bulls with a 129-109 score. Delaware is now 2-1 against the Bulls with one more meeting between the two teams.
It all started in the first half where the Bulls quickly went up 5-0 in the early minutes of the game, thanks to an Aaron Thomas jump shot and an Alfonzo McKinnie three pointer.
A couple minutes after the Bulls run, the Sevens decided to get in the fun and they drained two consecutive shots to tie the game up at 5-5. With 6:45 left in the first quarter, Delaware took their first lead of the game that put them up 11-10. Richaun Holmes hit the go ahead floating jump shot to give the Sevens that all important lead. Delaware would hold on to the lead for the rest of the quarter, ending with a 23-20 lead.
The Sevens came out fast in the second quarter going on a 7-2 run in the early minutes of the quarter. Shawn Long started the run with a lay up and ended with a Devondrick Walker three pointer.
The two teams would battle for a while with Sevens always keeping the Bulls chasing the lead. Then about 7:15 left in the half, Devondrick Walker hit a three pointer to put the Sevens up 40-30.
After Walker’s three, the Bulls would give the Sevens a scare by going on a 8-o run and pulling within 2 points of the lead. The Sevens would outscore the Bulls 16-10 in the rest of 2nd quarter, to end the half with a 56-50 lead.
Delaware shot 55 % from the field in the first half while Windy City shot 37 %.
Sevens shot 40% from the three point line in the first half while Bulls shot 26.7%.
Delaware had 11 turnovers in the first half while Windy City had 3.
David Laury III led the Sevens with 13 points in the first half.
Will Bynum led the Bulls with 15 points in the first half.
The second half got rolling and the Bulls were firing as they went on a 7-3 run to close the lead to 59-57. Alec Brown started the run with a lay up and Will Bynum ended with a three pointer.
In the third quarter, The Sevens struggled with hitting consistent shots and turnovers which let the Bulls right back in the game as it was only a three point lead with 7:47 left in the third.
Delaware found some momentum around the 7:00 minute mark in the quarter and went on a 7-0 run to put the score 74-64. The run started with a Richaun Holmes hook shot and ended with a David Laury III made free throw.
The Bulls outscored the Sevens 22-15 the rest of the way of the third quarter to make the Sevens lead shrink to 89-85.
In the final quarter, the Sevens came out on fire going on a 15-4 run to start the quarter to put the lead 105-88. Shawn Long started the run with a made free throw and James Webb III ended it with a made free throw.
The Bulls actually outscored the Sevens 22-18 the rest of the way but it did not matter as the 87ers hot start in the beginning of the quarter made up for the lack of it in the later. As the final buzzer sounded the Sevens walked away with a 124-109 win.
Devondrick Walker led the Sevens with 23 points in the game. Walker was a three pointer hitting machine all night going 7 for 7 vs the Bulls.
Seven other Delaware players hit double digits in points and they were James Webb III (11), David Laury III (16), Richaun Holmes (15), Dionte Christmas (10), Mikh McKinney (13), Shawn Long (19) and Roscoe Smith (11).
Delaware (14-10) takes on the Greensboro Swarm on Friday for the final game in the NBA D-League Showcase. Tip off is at 3 pm ET.
