New year, same result for the Delaware 87ers. The last game the Sevens played in 2016 was a win over the Long Island Nets and the first game of 2017 the result was 109-106 win for the 87ers over the Nets again. Sevens now have back to back wins and both are from the Long Island Nets.
It all started in the first quarter where Delaware came out on fire offensively, out scoring the Nets 31-18. The ever consistent Dionte Christmas led the Sevens with 6 points in the quarter. James Webb III was killing it in the rebound department for the Sevens collecting 7 ( 6 defensive, 1 offensive) in the quarter. This was the fifth time this season Delaware has scored 30 points or over in the first quarter and the Sevens are 4-1 when this happens.
The second quarter was a different story, the Sevens got sloppy and were not hitting their shots at a consistent basis. Delaware was able to maintain their lead all the way through the second quarter but the Nets were not far behind. The Sevens turned the ball over 10 times in the second quarter and the Nets only turned it over twice. Near at the 1:44 mark in the second, the Nets went a 13-2 run to close the gap in the lead going to half time with a 58-55 score. Yogi Ferrell led the Nets with 9 points in that late run in the second.
James Webb III led the Sevens in points with 12 in the first half and also landed himself a double-double with 10 rebounds ( 9 defensive, 1 offensive).
Yogi Ferrell led the Nets in points in the first half with 14.
In the third quarter the Sevens offense was nowhere to be found and the Nets took advantage of it. The Nets went on a 18-2 run at the 7:25 mark in the third, not only had them tie the game up at 63 but also saw them take the lead with a 76-65 score. The Nets would maintain the lead for the rest of the quarter and ending the third with a 81-77 lead.
Then in the fourth quarter the switch turned back on for the Sevens offense because they came out going on a early 9-0 run thanks to a Devondrick Walker three pointer that gave them a 83-81 lead. David Laury III and Devondrick Walker led the Sevens with 4 points each on the early run. Delaware held on the lead for a while but then the Nets started to get in a groove and went on a 7-2 run to tie the game up at 92 with 4:45 remaining in the game.
The two teams would then battle it out for the next couple minutes trading buckets and neither one having the lead for very long. Then Delaware stopped that taking the lead at 3:02 remaining in the game thanks to a Shawn Long free throw. The Sevens only had a three point lead with about a minute left when Brandon Triche downed a three to put them up 106-101. Dionte Christmas closed the scoring out making two free throw shots to seal the game for the Sevens with a 109-106 win.
Brandon Triche led the Sevens with 20 points in the game.
Five other Sevens hit double digits in points and they were David Laury III (18), James Webb III (19), Shawn Long (17), Dionte Christmas (14) and Devondrick Walker (10).
Three Sevens landed themselves a double-double in Monday’s game vs the Nets and they were Long ( 17 points & 13 rebounds), Laury III ( 18 points & 10 rebounds) and Webb III ( 19 points & 15 rebounds).
The Sevens (10-8) return to home to the Bob Carpenter Center Wednesday night to face the Maine Red Claws. Tip off is at 7 PM ET.
