It was the final game at Frawley stadium Sunday and the Blue Rocks tried to make a exciting comeback for the final game but came up short from digging themselves in a hole in the early innings to lose 8-7 to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
Rocks jumped out to an early 2-0 in the 2nd inning when first baseman Robert Pehl doubled and then 2 batters later shortstop Carlos Diaz hit a single to bring in Pehl for a run and helped advance catcher Luis Villegas to third. Then Villegas scored from a sacrificed fly from center fielder Cody Jones.
That big inning helped send Pelicans starting pitcher Erik Leal out of the game after two innings pitched. His final stats was he pitched 2 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 3 walks and 2 strike outs.
The Pelicans bullpen held the Rocks bats silent until the sixth inning where the Rocks bats came alive. Rocks offense scored 4 runs in the sixth inning cutting the score to 8-6.
Catcher Luis Villegas was once again making things happen in this game and he brought in a run and scored a run in the 6th inning.
DH Brandon Downes and left fielder Anderson Miller also had RBI’s in the inning.
Downes also scored Rocks last run in the 8th inning that made it 8-7 in the game.
Villegas has a season total of 22 RBIs.
Cody Jones now has a season total of 11 RBIs.
Diaz now has a season total of 6 RBIs.
Downes now has a season total of 65 RBIs.
Miller now has a season total of 12 RBIs.
Rocks were 7 for 15 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
Rocks pitching had a rough game and could never really stop the bleeding until the very end of the game.
Rocks starting pitcher Foster Griffin had 2 shutout innings before giving 4 runs up in the third inning and only lasting one more inning before getting pulled.
The bullpen of the Rocks only gave up 1 run in 5 innings of work.
