The Delaware 87ers battled the Grand Rapids Drive Saturday night and came out victorious in a 107-96 road win. This Delaware’s 2nd consecutive road win and third overall road win of the season.
It all started in the first quarter when the Drive came out fast and went on a early 10-4 run with 8:17 left in the quarter. The Drive’s Stanley Johnson had 6 points, 1 offensive rebound, and one block during the 10-4 run. While the Sevens were always in close reach of the lead, Grand Rapids never lost the lead in the 1st quarter. The Drive ended the first quarter up 28-20.
Then in the second quarter at 7:38 mark, the Sevens finally tied the game up at 34 a piece with a Sheldon McClellan lay up. Then a couple minutes later, the Sevens had their first lead since they were up 2-0 in the first quarter. They led 38-36 thanks to a Shawn Long lay up. The Drive did not get discouraged, it just motivated them and they went on a 11-2 run shortly after to go up 53-44. With near two minutes left in the quarter the Sevens answered back with a 11-6 run of their own to close the gap to four at the half with the score being 59-55.
Anthony “Cat” Barber led the Sevens with 12 points in the first half.
Stanley Johnson led the Drive with 18 points in the first half.
In the third quarter the Sevens was led by David Laury who scored 8 points in the quarter and he helped his team outscore the Drive 25-15. The Sevens ended the quarter with a 80-74 lead over the Drive.
In the fourth quarter, nothing was going to stop the Sevens from getting this win. The 87ers never lost the lead in the fourth and hung on to win 107-96 on the road.
Sevens Anthony “Cat” Barber and David Laury led the the team with 20 points.
Three other Sevens hit double figures in this game and that was Dionte Christmas (19), Shawn Long (15) and Brandon Triche (12).
Sevens (5-5) look for their third consecutive win tomorrow vs Fort Wayne Mad Ants at 5pm.
