The Wilmington Blue Rocks won in dramatic fashion on Wednesday with three stolen bases in the ninth which led to two runs to give Rocks the 2-1 win over the Buies Creek Astros.
The Rocks lineup did the work in the ninth to get the win but it was Rocks starting pitcher Ofreidy Gomez who kept the Astros in check for seven dominant innings.
Gomez went seven innings, four hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, seven strikeouts and one home run.
The standouts on the offensive side for the Rocks were center fielder Rudy Martin, third baseman D.J. Burt, second baseman Gabriel Cancel and DH Emmanuel Rivera.
Martin had one run, one walk and one stolen base in three at bats in the win.
Burt had one run, one hit, two strikeouts and one stolen base in four at bats in the win.
Cancel had one hit, one RBI, one strikeout and one stolen base in four at bats in the win.
Rivera had one RBI in three at bats in the win.
Astros Score First
The Astros did not waste any time to get a run on the board because their right fielder Corey Julks hit a home run off of Rocks starting pitcher Ofreidy Gomez to give his team a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Next Seven Innings All Pitching
Both teams pitching shut down the lineup of the opposing team and resulting in no runs scored until the ninth inning.
Rocks starter Gomez ended his day in the seventh inning, after dominating in seven innings, four hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, seven strikeouts and one home run.
Then, Jeremy Camp came in for Gomez for the Rocks and pitched one inning, one strikeout and earned his second win of the year.
Ninth Inning Drama
The top of the ninth inning started with Rocks center fielder Rudy Martin getting on base with a walk and second baseman D.J. Burt followed him on base with a single to right field.
Then, the next batter was Gabriel Cancel and as he was batting Martin stole third base and Burt stole second base which put both in scoring position.
Rocks Cancel answered his teammates stolen bases with hitting a single to third base which scored Martin to tie the game at one.
The next batter for the Rocks was DH Emmanuel Rivera and while he was batting, Cancel decided to join the stolen base party which landed him at second base.
Rivera answered Cancel’s stolen base with a sacrificed fly which scored Burt to give Rocks a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, it was all up to closer Tyler Zuber to complete the comeback win for the Rocks and he did just that as he went one inning and earned his seventh save of the season.
Rocks look to take the series win tomorrow against Buies Creek at Jim Perry Stadium. First pitch is at 6:00 pm ET.
