Blue Rocks fall to Salem in Extra Innings and Get Swept in the Series

The Blue Rocks let their 3-2 lead slip away  in the 9th inning and the momentum too. Rocks let the Salem Red Sox take the game in 11 innings in a 4-3 victory. Also, Red Sox swept the 3 game series.

Rocks got on the board first in the 4th inning when Rocks third baseman Robert Pehl hit a double that would score one run and then DH Chad Johnson scored a run on a ground out.

Then in the 7th inning, Rocks would increase their lead to 3-2 when  the second basemen Austin Bailey scored a run on a sacrifice fly.

Robert Pehl now has 25 RBIs , Johnson 20 RBIs and Bailey 26 RBIs on the season.

That was all the offense the Blue Rocks could muster against Salem’s starter Matt Kent who went 8 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, and had 5 strikeouts.

Blue Rocks starter Glenn Sparkman started out great throwing 4 shutout innings but then he gave up two runs in the 5th and that is where his game ended.

Sparkman pitched 5.2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and had 5 strike outs.

Then Derek Gordon came in  for relief of Sparkman and he threw 3 shutout innings until the 9th where he gave up a game tying home run to Red Sox’s second baseman Jose Sermo.

Then the game went to extra innings, Rocks pitcher Todd Eaton came in the 11th and let Red Sox’s left fielder Mike Meyers get on base with a infield single, then steal second base and then get to third base on a wild pitch. Then Salem’s shortstop Deiner Lopez hit a single to score Meyers and win the game 4-3.

Red Sox are 12-5 this seasons vs Blue Rocks.
