Rocks Take Series With 5-3 Win Vs Woodpeckers

After winning the first half Carolina League North title, the Wilmington Blue Rocks continue to cruise as the team took the series from the Fayetteville Woodpeckers with a 5-3 win on Sunday at Frawley Stadium.

The RBIs in the game came from DH MJ Melendez (3) and catcher Sebastian Rivero (2).

Five Blue Rocks players had runs in the win and they were center fielder Blake Perkins (1), second baseman Colby Schultz (1), center fielder Brewer Hicklen (1), third baseman Dennicher Carrasco (1) and Melendez (1).

Four Wilmington hitters gained a hit in the win and they were Schultz (1), Carrasco (1), Melendez (2) and Rivero (1).

MJ Melendez recorded a stolen base in the 5-3 win.

The Blue Rocks were two for six with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.

On the pitching side, Rocks starter Marcelo Martinez took his dings in this outing, as he went six innings, five hits, three earned runs, three runs, two walks, six strikeouts and three home runs.

C.J. Eldred would come into the game to relieve Martinez which he went two innings,three hits,one strikeout and earned the win ( first win of the season).

Robert Garcia would close it out for the pitching staff which he went one inning, one walk, two strikeouts and earned the save ( first of the season).

Woodpeckers Strike First But Rocks Respond In Second Inning

The Woodpeckers did not waste any time with getting a run on the board, as Bryan De La Cruz walked up to the plate as the first hitter of the game and hit a solo home run to left field to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Rocks would answer back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning.

The two runs came from Sebastian Rivero who hit a ground ball single to center field which scored Dennicher Carrasco and MJ Melendez to give the Rocks a 2-1 lead.

Fayetteville Homers in the Fourth and Sixth innings

Fayetteville had one consistent way of the getting runs in this game and that was through hitting home runs.

In the fourth inning, Woodpeckers Marty Costes hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game up at two.

The next run for Fayetteville would come in the top of the sixth inning when Michael Papierski would hit a solo home run to left field which gave his team a 3-2 lead.

After six innings, Rocks starting pitcher Marcelo Martinez day was over which it was a outing he took several dings. Martinez went six innings, five hits, three earned runs, three runs, two walks, six strikeouts and three home runs.

C.J. Eldred would come into the game to relieve Martinez which he threw a solid two innings with three hits,one strikeout and earned the win.

Rocks Score Three Runs In Eighth Inning To Seal Win

The Rocks batters were silent for five straight innings but that would change in the eighth inning when the team scored three runs to take over the lead.

The three runs in the inning came from MJ Melendez who hit a double to left field which allowed Brewer Hicklen, Colby Schultz and Blake Perkins to score. The three RBIs from Melendez would give the Rocks a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth.

In the ninth inning, it was all up to Rocks pitcher Robert Garcia to seal the 5-3 win which he did just that as he saw four batters in the inning and he struck out two of them.

Garcia stats was he went one inning, one walk, two strikeouts and earned the save.

The Rocks stay at Frawley Stadium to take on the Lynchburg Hillcats on June 10th at 6:35pm ET.
